Vigil care - Companionship at the bedside in the end stages of life. If you want to talk, we can talk; if you’d like silence, I can be a calm presence.
Emotional/spiritual support - Any and all feelings, questions, and unfinished business are welcome, and we can explore those if you’d like. Nothing is out of bounds!
Rituals - Support with the rituals that are important to you and/or assistance with reaching out to spiritual/religious leaders and communities.
Assistance with personal care - Although there are limits to what I can do in regards to personal care — I’m not trained as a care aide or a nurse — I do have experience helping others with these matters and can assist in the end stages of life (no transfers to commode or toilet, and no assistance in bathtub/shower).
Discussion of the dying process - We can discuss (in as much or as little detail as you’d like!) what to expect.
Care of body after death - Education about conducting a viewing/visitation; and assistance with washing and dressing, setting up a space that is suitable for viewing/visitation by family and friends, and making the experience a meaningful one.
Assistance with funeral planning - Whether you’d like to plan a funeral, a celebration of life, a memorial, a graveside service, or something else, I can either help with that or direct you to a funeral home that is more suited to help you.
Remembrance/legacy projects - Assistance with writing cards/letters to friends and family, putting together photo books or a poster/collage for a service, writing an obituary and a eulogy, etc.
Resources - I have a list of books and videos that you might find helpful, and we can discuss the organizations, support groups, and other places that might assist you in this stage of life.
